The Host Town

Fuenlabrada, Spain

Fuenlabrada is a city and municipality of Spain located in the Community of Madrid. As of 2018, it had a population of 193,586, making it the region's fourth most populated municipality. Its name derives from the contraction of 'fuente labrada', Spanish for 'carved fountain'.

There is evidence of human settlement in the area dating back to the Paleolithic (La Cantueña) and the Bronze Age (Casas del Cerro). Other settlements in the current municipal area, including Loranca, Albas and Fregacedos, existed during the Upper Middle Ages.

The founding of the village of Fuenlabrada can be traced to the late 14th century, when it was populated by former inhabitants of the nearby settlements of Loranca, Albas and Fregacedos. The first mention of Fuenlabrada, which by the early 16th century was part of the Land of Madrid, was recorded later in the century, during the reign of Philip II, in the so-called Topographic Relations of Philip II.

While the agricultural sector of the economy remained dominant, the making of rosquillas and buns in the municipality became renowned among the surrounding towns by the end of the 19th century. Following the end of the 1936–1939 Civil War, in which some parts of Fuenlabrada endured serious damage, the Dirección General de Regiones Devastadas undertook some building works in the municipality during the 1940s and 1950s.

Fuenlabrada witnessed a dramatic population explosion in the 1970s and 1980s, due to large scale immigration of young workers coming from the capital city and other agrarian regions (chiefly Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia and Galicia) seeking affordable prices in housing. Going from 7,369 inhabitants in 1970, the municipality reached a population of 18,442 by 1975, and 65,181 in 1980, credited as the biggest relative population increase in Spain during that decade. Foreign workers have also settled in the city, most of them coming from Latin America, Africa, the Maghreb, China and Romania. The demographic growth has continued in the ensuing decades.

The city is home to basketball team Baloncesto Fuenlabrada. Their home games are played at Fernando Martín sports centre, which has a capacity of 5,700.

CF Fuenlabrada is the local football team, playing in Segunda División (second tier in Spanish league). They play as home team at the Estadio Fernando Torres, inaugurated by the footballer's parents on 1st September 2011. The stadium has a capacity of 7,500.

Since 1979, the municipality has been a stronghold of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and has been part of the so-called "red belt" of the Community of Madrid.

Additional Information

This Grand Prix transmission was preceded by a 30-minute Grand Prix Presents introductory programme. This included 'Captain's Passion' - a non-scoring game between the two teams which involved the team captains having to stand with a tray above their shoulders while the patrons had to answer questions about the towns they represented. If the patrons got the question right, weight was added to the opponent's tray. However, if they got it wrong, the additional weight went onto their own team's tray. The competitor who dropped the tray first would lose the game. The winner - in this instance the Polinya team - carried the advantage of the Golden Vachette into the programme proper - adding 2 pts to their score should they win the game they presented it on, as in the 2025 edition.

'The Greased Pole' (Game 1) was a game that had been played in Grand Prix in the early 2000s but had been dropped due to security issues relating to its organisation. It involved a greased 6m high pole, from the top of which joints of ham were hung. The players, in turn, had to retrieve the joints. Polinya played their Joker on the game and made it look easy by retrieving 8 compared to Cantalejo's 2. This game is commonly played at many summer festivals around Spain, either with a vertical or an horizontal pole.

During the game 'Alice in Fallsland', the main referee Asun Langa fell to the floor whilst officiating on the game. Fortunately for her, since the players were protected with safety equipment and she was not, the outcome was not serious. She responded with a smile to a concerned Ramón García, confirming that she was perfectly fine after the incident.

A slight difference was made in the Dictionary game for 2026. While the first 2 questions gave the teams +/- 3 pts as before, the last one had a slightly higher value (+/- 4 pts). While this was made with the intention of making the last round more exciting, Polinya had already won the heat by a huge margin, and it only served to deliver an even more devastating result for Cantalejo.
