The Host Town

Fuenlabrada, Spain

Fuenlabrada is a city and municipality of Spain located in the Community of Madrid. As of 2018, it had a population of 193,586, making it the region's fourth most populated municipality. Its name derives from the contraction of 'fuente labrada', Spanish for 'carved fountain'.

There is evidence of human settlement in the area dating back to the Paleolithic (La Cantueña) and the Bronze Age (Casas del Cerro). Other settlements in the current municipal area, including Loranca, Albas and Fregacedos, existed during the Upper Middle Ages.

The founding of the village of Fuenlabrada can be traced to the late 14th century, when it was populated by former inhabitants of the nearby settlements of Loranca, Albas and Fregacedos. The first mention of Fuenlabrada, which by the early 16th century was part of the Land of Madrid, was recorded later in the century, during the reign of Philip II, in the so-called Topographic Relations of Philip II.

While the agricultural sector of the economy remained dominant, the making of rosquillas and buns in the municipality became renowned among the surrounding towns by the end of the 19th century. Following the end of the 1936–1939 Civil War, in which some parts of Fuenlabrada endured serious damage, the Dirección General de Regiones Devastadas undertook some building works in the municipality during the 1940s and 1950s.

Fuenlabrada witnessed a dramatic population explosion in the 1970s and 1980s, due to large scale immigration of young workers coming from the capital city and other agrarian regions (chiefly Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia and Galicia) seeking affordable prices in housing. Going from 7,369 inhabitants in 1970, the municipality reached a population of 18,442 by 1975, and 65,181 in 1980, credited as the biggest relative population increase in Spain during that decade. Foreign workers have also settled in the city, most of them coming from Latin America, Africa, the Maghreb, China and Romania. The demographic growth has continued in the ensuing decades.

The city is home to basketball team Baloncesto Fuenlabrada. Their home games are played at Fernando Martín sports centre, which has a capacity of 5,700.

CF Fuenlabrada is the local football team, playing in Segunda División (second tier in Spanish league). They play as home team at the Estadio Fernando Torres, inaugurated by the footballer's parents on 1st September 2011. The stadium has a capacity of 7,500.

Since 1979, the municipality has been a stronghold of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and has been part of the so-called "red belt" of the Community of Madrid.

Additional Information

A new kind of Joker was introduced for the 2025 series of Grand Prix - The Golden Vachette - which added two bonus points to the scoreboard of the team presenting it for play, but only if that team won the game in question. It could be played in any game apart from the three rounds of  'The Dictionary', and, in a change from previous series, each team had only one Joker to play. This change also meant that the vachette was employed in a different way, disturbing the progress of some games without being activated by either of the teams.

In Game 1 - 'Crazy Logs' - one of Huelma's salmons was deducted from its total since the player threw one away before exiting the pool. They still won the game by five salmons to three.

Unbelievably, none of the players on Game 2 - 'The Mathematician Penguins' - were able to deduct 17 from 43! The first one to fall selected '5' as his answer and the rest went to '36'! According to the rules, the Celanova competitor was eliminated since he was the first one to give a wrong answer. Remarkably, the same thing happened again in the sixth round of the game, when 76 divided by 2 was answered '36' by all the players!

This heat witnessed a disastrous playing of 'The Dictionary' with only one correct answer from six, leading to a low-scoring contest. Huelma, who had been in the lead from the beginning, lost at the very last hurdle. Celanova won the contest despite only winning three of the nine games and answering correctly on just one dictionary round!

Additional Information

For the second week running, the team leading going into the first round of 'The Dictionary' (last week Huelma, this week L'Olleria) undid all their good work on the physical games, squandering thier lead in the intellectual rounds. In this case, L'Olleria answered just one of three questions correctly, whereas their rivals from Urdúliz gave correct answers to all three of theirs.

Despite this disastrous conclusion to their performance, the L'Olleria team would have taken some solace when they saw the league table rankings as their score of 21pts installed them in 2nd place of the four teams that had to this point participated in Grand Prix 2025. This was because the first heat had been a low-scoring affair and the winning team of Celanova had amassed a mere 16pts - and were in imminent danger of being eliminated from the semi-finals (which would comprise the four highest ranked teams) as six teams were still to post their scores.

The game 'Gone with the Velcro' ws a variation of the game '2 Velcroed', which was seen in the 2024 Christmas Grand Prix specials and had become a fan favourite. In the first iteration, the players just had to copy a single image, but here the players were asked to do the same and would only recieve a point if the Team Patron could identify the scene they were representing (i.e. playing football).

The city council of Urdúliz spoiled the outcome of this heat by publicly inviting its citizens to attend another recording, either on the 4th or 7th July. This announcement was subsequently removed, but by that time even the newspapers had taken account of the call and everyone knew that Urdúliz had won the heat.

The viewing figures for Grand Prix at this point in its 2025 series were still holding their own, comfortably ahead of the competition in the same timeslot.

Additional Information

On the night of transmission, a 40-minute behind-the-scenes programme was screened from 9.45pm called Grand Prix: The Pre-Show, revealing how a programme of the series was brought to the screens. Grand Prix Heat 3 followed afterwards, starting at 10.25pm.

The Alagón team planned to use their prize money from this heat, should they have won it, to relocate the town's bull run to a larger venue.

The island of La Gomera, in the Canary Islands, is notable in the sense of its inhabitants' unique way of communicating: the Gomeran whistle, a fully-fledged language based on whistles that has been used for many centuries. Natives used to communicate with these whistles due to the difficult, mountainous terrain of the island with big altitudinal differences from town to town. The whistles can be heard from distances as great as 2500 to 3000 metres. This was, of course, aknowledged during the show. San Sebastian de la Gomera is the biggest town in the island, with 9,584 habitants (2023 census), accounting for almost half of the island's total population of 22,361 (also 2023).

The fourth game - 'The Mathematician Penguins' - was a closely-fought race, so much so that a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decision was required to determine the victor!

Additional Information

Usually the patrons only play in simple games or by giving directions. However, this time, both patrons played in 'The Mathematician Penguins' game, putting the costume on and doing a nice job. Inés Hernand, the Herencia patron, survived half of the game and Peñaranda de Bracamonte patron Patxi Salinas reached the final. In the final, the referee had to check the video playback as it appeared that Herencia's player had pushed Patxi, which is against the rules. In the end, it was judged that no offence had been committed and the result stood. The performance of the last man standing from the Herencia players was quite remarkable, since at first three Peñaranda competitors were still playing and he was alone.

Despite proving himself an excellent player of 'The Mathematician Penguins' game, Patxi Salinas put in a disastrous performance in 'The Super Bowling Pins', directing the player to shoot both host Ramón Garcia and Salinas himself instead of the bowling pins, and leaving the player lost in the game for over a minute. Still, he managed to recompose himself and do a decent job by scoring 4pts. He still was no match to one of the best performances of the season in the game by Herencia, with Inés Hernand giving very precise directions and scoring 6pts. This was aknowledged by Ramón García, who congratulated her after the game.

With just one heat to be played, Herencia had guaranteed themselves a semi-final spot, and Urduliz and Sebastián de la Gomera were also in positions whereby it was not possible for them to be eliminated. The team of L'Olleria were holding onto their semi-final placing by the skin of their teeth...

Grand Prix's ratings continued to hold up well and this week their 11.5% share meant that the programme ended up as the top-rated show of the night.

Additional Information

This was a very close heat which ended with both teams locked in a tight battle in the deciding rounds of 'The Dictionary'. With one question left to go, the scores were tied at 28-28, with Cubas de la Sagra having answered all three questions correctly. The L'Alborç team had matched their achievement on the first two questions and all they needed to do was answer correctly on their final Dictionary round and the victory was theirs. As it stood, were they to answer correctly, L'Alborç, Cubas de la Sagra, Herencia and Urdúliz would qualify for the semi-finals and San Sebastián de la Gomera would be eliminated. However, despite a fine performance throughout the contest, the L'Alborç team unfortunately answered incorrectly, losing rather than gaining 3pts. This left them in 2nd place and on 25pts, which allowed San Sebastián de la Gomera to squeeze into the semi-finals in their place. As the result of the contest was announced, the L'Alborç mayor Joan Sans was unable to hide his tears from the camera, such was his shock and disappointment at losing the competition and missing out on progression to the semi-finals. Audience members and competitors from both towns cheered his name and Ramón García made a point of giving him a big, conciliatory hug - a good example of the warmth and caring nature of the show.

The mayor of Cubas de la Sagra was not present at the recording of this Grand Prix heat, so he instead sent the deputy mayor, Tania Sánchez. No official explanation was given for his absence, but obviously it was a planned absence as the mayor featured in the town's postcard video, in which he was seen passing the baton to the deputy mayor and wishing her and the team well.

Viewing figures continued to be good, with Grand Prix being the most watched programme on Spanish television on the night of Monday 4th August 2025. It's nearest rival had a 10.7% share compared to Grand Prix's 12.6%.

Additional Information

This Grand Prix semi-final was unusual in the history of the programme in that both team's mayors were absent and were represented by their deputies - and both deputies were named Sánchez!

After the first two games which resulted respectively in a tie and a win for Urdúliz, this contest developed in a very one-sided fashion. Other than 'The Super Bowling Pins', Cubas de la Sagra won all the remaining games. Such was the chasm between the points scored by the rival teams that only a single round of 'The Dictionary' was needed in order to determine the winner of this semi-final. Even if Cubas de la Sagra had answered the second and third rounds incorrectly and Urdúliz had answed correctly, the score would have been 23-21 to Cubas de la Sagra, and therefore those rounds were not played.

During the shoot the third game - 'Shoot the Penguinduck' - one of the disturbers from the Urdúliz team was injured and had to skip most of the game. This situation helped Cubas de la Sagra win the game.

This semi-final witnessed Grand Prix's first week in 2025 where it was not the top rated show on its night of broadcast, slipping to 735,000 viewers and a 10.0% share. The top programme on the night rated slightly higher and recorded a 10.8% share. By way of comparison the first five heats of Grand Prix 2025 had been seen by an average of 929,600 viewers with a 12.8% share.

Additional Information

This was a contest won and lost in the three climactic rounds of 'The Dictionary'. Herencia were leading by a healthy 6 pts at the end of the physical games, 26-20, but answered their last two questions incorrectly and the tables were turned as San Sebastián de la Gomera did not put a foot wrong on the game, answering all three questions correctly. In doing so, they turned a 6 pts deficit into a 6pts lead!

Additional Information

The result of the 'Hot Potato' game was subject to a debate. During the second round, when San Sebastián de la Gomera had only its mayor alive in the game, Cubas de la Sagra's patron said the correct answer just one second before the balloon exploded. The rules about this have not been clear, with sometimes the player holding the balloon at the moment of the explosion being eliminated, and other times, as in this instance, it was the other player who got eliminated. Either way, this decision would not have altered the outcome of the final.

Before the eighth game - 'The Mathematician Penguins' - a "special round" was played with Ramón, Ángela, Wilbur and Lala for once participating in a game. The game itself ended in a very close race with several instant replays needed to determine the winner. In the end, both finalist players from each team of the game ended up in a hug and celebrating, which showed that Grand Prix is more a show about having fun together, and that the result is of secondary importance.

The contest was ended early when it was mathematically impossible for the Cubas de la Sagra team to match or beat their rivals' score. When San Sebastián de la Gomera answered their third question in 'The Dictionary' correctly, they opened up an unassailable 7pts lead and as such, Cubas de la Sagra were not required to answer their final question. The final score was not shown on screen and consequently our image above has been generated by JSFnetGB.

This was the first time that a team from the Canary Islands had won a Grand Prix final, and only the second time - after Haría took part in the first-ever final in 1995 - that a team from the region had reached the final. San Sebastián de la Gomera was the first Canarian team to take part in Grand Prix since 2005.

This year, the 30th anniversary of Grand Prix was celebrated. Despite having a different name for thet 1995 edition (Cuando Calienta el Sol), several clips of that year's final were shown during this programme. Carlos Valle, the present mayor of Cudillero (the 1995 winners) attended this final to award the 2025 Champions prize. It should be said that Ramón García was given honorary citizenship of Cudillero after the 1995 show.

The audience response to Grand Prix was again considered a success in 2025. It marginally bettered its 2024 performance, with an aggregate share of 12.3% of the viewing audience (0.1% up on the previous year). Seven of the eight editions topped the charts on their nights of broadcast, with the eighth placing second on the night by a small margin. Three years into its revival, Grand Prix remained in rude health.
