Additional Information

In its fourth year, Bellezze al Bagno (Bathing Beauties) continued as an international competition between Italian, French, German and Spanish teams. This year it moved to the Rete 4 channel.

In the 1993 series, the team leading on the scoreboard after six games would automatically qualify for a seventh and final game. The other three teams had to compete in a game called 'From 3 to 1'. Each week this game was the same - a battle between competitors in the pool in which they had to fight with poles that had large balls at either end; the idea being to unbalance the opponent to the point that he fell into the water. In the first heat of this game, the 3rd and 4th placed team were pitted against each other, with the winner then facing representatives of the 2nd placed team. The winner of this last match played against the first classified team in a time-based game and the first team to complete the game was declared the winner of the competition as a whole.

The Spanish team participating in this heat was erroneously revealed in newspapers as representing 'Gaba', though no such town, municipality or city exists in Spain. The team was in actuality from Gavà, a municipality in the Baix Llobregat comarca, in the province of Barcelona in Catalonia.

Team Personnel

The Spanish team of Sabadell was formed of members of the Club Natació Sabadell, an aquatic sports club. Founded in 1916 and based at the Piscina Can Llong, it is now regarded as probably the most important swimming club in Spain, and has sent many members to the Olympics. However, it is probably best known for its women's water polo team, which has been the most successful team in the national championship in recent years with nine titles since 2000. In 2011 it won the European Cup, becoming the first Spanish team to win this competition. The men's team won its third national cup in 2012. The club members' sporting prowess also served them well in Bellezze al Bagno, in which they recorded a series of victories.
